Burkes’ Bulletin Nov 2007

Recent times
Since June 2007, there has been a steady stream of new arrivals. In addition there are now two additional staff linked to Finance and Projects.

For the newcomers this has meant giving assistance with orientation in many different spheres of activity ranging from finance to general survival skills. We are reminded of how much even relatively new people like us take for granted.

It is easy to forget that experiences such as regular power blackouts, water shortage, poor infrastructure, being awkward in Nigerian environment is a strain. This is additional to engaging SIM culture and taking on a whole series of new relationships.

The reverse also happens. The Nigerian accountant who now works with Peter has never worked before with a white person. Neither has he interacted socially with batures (white people).

We asked our Nigerian co-workers what should we warn new staff about missionaries.

The list was rather interesting included:

  • Missionaries have finite time in Nigeria be it weeks, months or years;
  • Focussed thinking that sometimes forgets relationships are vital;
  • English spoken is not Nigerian style English;
  • Concerned with being punctual;
  • Directness of speech;
  • The list goes on and on

On the technical side Peter’s new assistant needed to learn computer skills including spreadsheet and general software skills, in addition to adjusting to an office with high accountability expectations. It has been very hard on Silas but after some weeks the signs of adjustment and self confidence are emerging.

Peter is very thankful that he took the advice of others to wait until convinced before God that the right person turned up. The six months waiting was hard but is clearly justified.

Woyke Guesthouse: New arrivals for Anne has meant an intensive time preparing accommodation and helping folk with settling in issues. We had one new family who are serving out side of Jos stay in the compound off and on for a month while they addressed housing issues. The fellowship was enriching.

Anne now has lists for kitting up homes and flats. Give her some basic details about a new arrival and, she is off and running sourcing the needed basics to set up residences.

Thank you to all who have supported us in different ways.

Peter and Anne Burke.

Praise points:

  • For safety and security we have enjoyed.
  • New staff to assist Peter in his duties.
  • For our Nigerian Co-workers.
  • For joy of being able to give thanks to God for the great things He has done.

  • Travel safety and personal safety.
  • Good adjustment by new members of the SIM team.
  • For students learning new concepts through Financial Management course from a Christian perspective.
  • Ways will be found to encourage Muslims to reflect deeply on who Jesus Christ really is.
